This is an abstract representation of the white matter pathways, or tracts, of the brain and the differential activation of these pathways in different brain states. Different colours represent different modes of communication. Each image has a distinct ambiance that arises as an emergent property of the colours and shapes rendered, just as distinct phenomena such as attention, emotion, perception and consciousness emerge from the activity of neural pathways in the brain The 'tracts' were rendered using laser light trails captured with long-exposure photography. The title is chosen to reflect the interaction that takes place here between scientific and artistic methodologies.
