Depicted is a model of a bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) in subthalamic nucleus. For the left electrode, stimulation of the second uppermost contact is modeled at 3V and 1000Ω impedance. Connectivity between the resulting "volume of activated tissue" and other brain regions as defined by the automatic anatomic labeling atlas is estimated using a global fiber-tracking method. Modeling of DBS electrodes and stimulation effects may help to better understand DBS mechanisms of action and predict patient specific outcomes / side effects.
